s they crept around, becoming increasingly
impressed with the treasure beneath the trash,
they heard footsteps. In what probably resembled
a scene from a B-movie thriller, the two ducked
into a closet. Was it a vagrant? A security
guard? Col. Mustard with the lead pipe in
the library? They didn't wait to see. They
made a break for it, ran to the car and waited.
A nicely dressed woman soon followed. She
had seen them go into the building and wanted
to know if they were Realtors. They weren't,
but the three of them returned for a more
complete inspection of the premises.
Greer made countless phone calls to find
the Havana's owner. The building existed in
a banking/Resolution Trust Corp. limbo. She
began bidding on the building in 1990 and,
after working with seven different asset management
companies, bought it at foreclosure in 1992.
Upon purchase of the Havana, she sold the
Monte Vista property, which remains in operation
today.
